Baseando-se no modelo de Southern rock tipo Lynyrd Skynyrd, com uma boa dose de outlaw country honky tonk e um pouco de bluegrass, gospel e R & B misturado, Blackberry Smoke é composto por (vocalista / guitarrista Charlie Starr, o guitarrista / vocalista Paul Jackson, o baixista / vocalista Richard Turner, o teclista Brandon Still, e o baterista Brit Turner), formado em Atlanta, Geórgia, em 2000 e rapidamente construiu uma base de fãs leais no Southern circuito turístico, abrindo para bandas de nível superior como Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, o Zac Brown Band , George Jones, e outros. O grupo lançou um álbum de estréia, Bad Luck Ain't No Crime, em 2004, em Cock of the Walk Records, em seguida, seguiu com a auto-lançado EP New Honky Tonk Bootlegs em 2008. Um segundo EP, Little Piece of Dixie, apareceu de Big Karma Records no mesmo ano. Um álbum completo, este também chamado Little Piece of Dixie, foi lançado em 2009 por BamaJam Records. A banda então assinou com Southern Ground Records de Zac Brown, que lançou The Whippoorwill em 2012.
